Essential Pre-Ride Checks
Before you take your bike for a spin you should check that it is in working order. Discovering there is a problem a few miles from home is problematic to say the least. Discovering there is a problem before you ride means you can fix it and avoid complications.
This post will show you what to check before you ride.
Ensure your tyres are inflated to the correct pressure before you ride. You will find the tyre pressure on the side of the tyre. Also check there is nothing embedded in the tyre. If there is remove it using a gloved hand. If an object has embedded itself in the rubber it is a good idea to replace the tyre. Small stones often stick to the tyre and if they are not removed they will make their way through the tyre and cause a puncture. Check your tyres before you ride.
To check the brakes simply lift the front wheel up and spin it, and then pull the brake. If all things are working well the brakes will stop the wheel.
Should the brake pads rub on the wheel (brake rub) and your wheel is not buckled, the chances are your cantilevers are not straight and need to be adjusted. Another reason could be the wheel isn’t locked in the forks or frame.
If you notice when you pull the brake that it almost touches the handle bar, this is a good sign your brake cables need replacing. If you experience a lot of friction when you pull the brake, this is also a sign that you need to replace the cables.
Don’t forget to check the front and back brake.
Check the quick release of your wheels to ensure they are tight and hold the wheel in place. This would make the ride very short should the wheel not be locked into the right place.
Ensure you take the following items on every ride especially if you are cycling alone.
- Two inner tubes
- Tyre leaver and puncture repair kit
- Multi tool that includes a chain tool and allen key
- Mini pump
- Food and fluid. Ideally you want two bottles of water and enough food for the duration of the ride.
- Waterproof jacket
- Phone, money, and credit card. Ensure your phone has a waterproof case
It is always a good idea to check your bag as it is easy to forget to restock it when an item is used.
Checking your bike before you ride can spare you considerable stress a few miles in. So ensure your bike is working well before you get on the saddle.
