Avril Byrne had a triumphant day at the 70.3 Ironman in Mallorca, on 14 May 2011, finishing strongly in second position in her women's category and securing her place in the World Championships which take place in Las Vegas later in the year.

The field of competitors numbering 2000 had a glories day of sunshine with temperatures reaching into the 30 °C. The sea swim was in calm waters taking place in the bay of Alcudia.

The bike ride went along the coast road towards Port de Pollença then on to the 15 km accent to Lluc before descending to Inca and ending with a flat ride with the last 9 km into a head wind to the Port of Alcudia.

The run was a circuit done 3 times along the beach of Alcudia which proved the toughest section as the temperatures reached 33 °C . A fantastic event enjoyed by all competitors ; it is sure to be even a bigger event next year.
