3rd to 5th June 2011 The event was based in the west of Donegal. The format was 4 stages :
Stage I : 2 men opened a gap and were never caught ; Damien Shaw (Lakeside Wheelers) took the victory and the yellow leaders jersey with a 35 sec advantage on the peloton.
Stage III : this was going to be a stage with plenty of attacks ; a 12 men group formed at the front and got a gap of 1 min 40 sec but the peloton responded and closed it down bringing it all back together ; then a 3 men break went clear and as the gap increased the yellow jersey came under threat and responded to close the gap to under a minute ; at the finish Liam Curran (Curran Racing ) took the stage victory. Damien Shaw (Lakeside Wheelers) held on to the leader's jersey finishing in the main peloton. Stage IV was the biggest stage of the event and could change the
GC as the finish was at the summit of the 3 miles Glengeish climb with gradients reaching 20%.The weather had changed and heavy rain forecast was given for all the stage : this was going to make it difficult for the riders on this very technical stage.
On the second KOH the yellow jersey attacked and opened a 35 sec gap but was pulled back by the peloton. Then an 8 men break went that did not contain the yellow jersey. At the fourth KOH the gap was 1 min 35 back to the yellow jersey. The leader with 22 miles of racing left had to bridge the gap to the break to keep the yellow jersey. With 8 miles to the finish he joined the leading break and lead the charge up the final climb to the finish with another possible stage win in sight. The yellow jersey had to settle for second as Matthew Adair (Slane Cycles CU) forged ahead to take the stage victory.
Congratulations to the event organizer Four Masters Cycling Club for a very well run event. Martin Birney |
